I’ve been so busy with life lately that I haven’t had time to sit with my thoughts and write a blog.
Life has been a good busy not a bad busy and family life has been just as full on, never a dull moment.
Term 1 ended and with the holiday break came the opportunity for Leni to reset and brace himself for a new term in a new class.
The move has been a positive one and he has settled well into term 2. His teacher has been extremely supportive and encouraging and has kept us in the loop, providing us with regular updates on how he has been travelling.
I found myself thinking a lot about our journey recently and just how far we have come and how much further we have to go.
I had to remind myself that people don’t grow out of ADHD, they continue to grow into it. The challenge for us as parents is to make sure we continue to grow too.
When Leni gets tired and things take a turn I have to draw on my experience and research from the past few years and remember to use it. And it’s when I do this that we have the most success.
If something doesn’t feel right or I’m unsure about how I might be reading into a situation I’ll sit down and open one of my many books to see if there is something I can do to change things around.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again one of my most revered books for help is 12 Principles For Raising A Child With ADHD by Dr Russel A. Barkley.
For me he is the guru of all things ADHD and it’s through his learnings that I continue to learn.
Find your guru and refer to it or them often because it will really help you to stay on track.
He writes in his book; “it is my wish for you that in using these principles, you have not only reduced your child’s impairments, but more importantly, you have greatly improved and strengthened your relationship you have with your child. That relationship can sustain you both throughout your life”.
My relationship with Leni has strengthened immensely in the past few years and will continue to get stronger. There will always be ups and downs and that’s why there will always be things to write about.
