And then there were two.

A while ago in one of my posts I mentioned that there was a possibility that our teenage son, Lenis brother, also had ADHD.

I don’t think we would have considered exploring a diagnosis if we had not lived and breathed ADHD with Leni, but there were signs which indicated it was likely so we decided to look into it.

We arranged for our son to be assessed at the same clinic that did Lenis assessment with a team of amazing professionals and by the end of the day we had our answer.

He was diagnosed with combined ADHD like Leni.

He is a bright young man and yes there were signs at an early age but because we have always been told boys will be boys and there were never any major red flags it was hard to know whether it was something that needed to be looked into.

His paediatrician has suggested medication for school to help with focus but our son is worried that it will change him. He had to watch Leni struggle to find the right medication and dose along with all the ups and downs that came with that so he is understandably nervous.

We will support whatever he chooses to do, medication or not. The main purpose of a diagnosis was to know for sure whether he did have it and to make sure that if he did we could get the school to support him and make accommodations for his learning that benefit him.

The hardest thing now will be convincing him to make the most of the accomodations available to him. After all he is a teenage boy and they are wary of anything that might make them stand out from the crowd.

Like Leni we will advocate for him every day until we can’t because like his brothers we want him to succeed in whatever he chooses to do and we want him to be confident and capable doing it.

Stay tuned for more on our journey as we navigate the next few years with 2 ADHDers in our home. One preteen and one teen. It’s bound to be interesting ride.
