We found out a few weeks ago that Leni would be getting a new teacher for the remainder of term 4 as his much adored teacher has taken long service leave for the remainder of the year, which was kind of sprung on us pretty quickly.
Children with ADHD don’t do very well with change because they love routine. A predictable schedule offers them consistency which helps make them feel safe and secure so when it’s disrupted it can really throw things out of whack for them.
The Monday that his new teacher was to take over the class permanently he flat out refused to go to school. I thought he was being difficult but in reality he was just scared and unsure because he didn’t think his new teacher would understand him.
That night we talked about his feelings and I reassured him that his new teacher was already aware of his ADHD and seemed really excited about supporting him for the remainder of the year.
The next morning he woke up, got dressed for school without a fuss and off he went. He had a good day. The world did not end and he realised it would all be ok.
Later that week we headed away for a few days where we had a great time and not one meltdown. Yes he was kept busy but for the first time ever he was able to tell us when he was hungry or in need of time out before a meltdown ensued so we could get on top of it.
ADHD is such a challenging journey that when you get small victories like these you need to celebrate them. It’s these small moments that keep me going as parent and alleviate some of that despair that is often felt when navigating unchartered waters.
When so many other things are weighing on my mind at the moment I am thankful that Leni was able to provide me with these small wins to keep me focused on the journey ahead.
